What are the prostate cancer treatment options for those who have been diagnosed with this frightening condition? Actually, there are several. In fact, there are so many prostate cancer treatment options available to patients that many might find all of the possibilities a little overwhelming. But the key to making it all a little less overwhelming is learning about each option, and all of the pros and cons each one entails.
Hormone Therapy
One of the drawbacks of some of the more traditional prostate cancer treatment options is that they can be somewhat invasive. And the more invasive a treatment, the more pain and discomfort a patient will have to deal with, and the longer their recovery time will be.
One of the less invasive treatments is hormone therapy. However, while hormone therapy shows a lot of promise, it isn’t perfect. While hormone therapy can help to fight cancer initially, it will stop working after a year or two. However, it can very successfully be used in conjunction with other treatments, especially if the cancer spreads beyond the prostate area.
Surgery
Another of the traditional prostate cancer treatment options is surgery. But some surgeries are more invasive than other. The surgery commonly used to treat prostate cancer involved cutting certain nerves so that the surgeon could reach the area affected by the cancer. Unfortunately, those nerves control erection and, once cut, the patient who has undergone the procedure will experience impotence.
Robotic laparoscopic surgery is a less invasive surgical option. A robotic arm is used to make a small incision in the skin, allowing the cancer cells to be removed. Unlike traditional surgery, recovery time from robotic laparoscopic surgery is relatively speedy, and patients are able to leave the hospital after a much shorter period of time.
Radiation Therapy
Anyone who hears the word “cancer” almost immediately thinks of radiation therapy. And they also think of the negative effects of the therapy. It’s true that radiation can be used to very successfully treat cancer. But patients who undergo traditional radiation treatments often suffer from physical ailments, feeling sick and weak a lot of the time.
Fortunately, there is another prostate cancer treatment option that involves radiation. Seed therapy involves implanting radioactive pellets (or “seeds”) directly into the site of the cancer. Because the use of the radiation is kept localized to the specific area of the body where the cancer is found, the rest of the patient’s body won’t be affected as drastically.
There are many different prostate cancer treatment options available to patients. And learning all they can about them is the best way to choose the treatment that would be right for them.
